Make a few small fall choices that support biodiversity all winter. Ontario's changing seasons and diverse landscapes make even a small backyard a fascinating place to observe nature.

Leave habitat where possible

Move excess leaves into planting beds and sheltered corners rather than removing every leaf from the property.

Keep seed heads standing

Many native perennials provide food and structure through autumn and winter.

Prepare without overcleaning

Clear storm drains and slippery paths, but leave some hollow stems and natural material intact.

Secure compost and garbage

Wildlife seeks food before and during winter. Tight lids and good housekeeping prevent conflicts.

Plan next year

Notice which plants attracted insects and birds, and make a short list of locally appropriate additions.

Ontario backyard reminder: Species, bylaws and growing conditions vary by region. Observe wildlife from a distance, choose locally suitable plants and check current municipal and provincial guidance before acting.

Keep exploring

Every backyard can become a little more welcoming to nature. Start with one change, notice what visits, and build on what works.
